Alternative fuel cars simply means that they operate using another source of fuel other then gasoline, or any engine that is not completely relying on petroleum. Environmental laws and global warming have made alternate power sources a high rank for the governments and all car manufacturers all over the world.

Contest boosted by government agencies, such as the US Department of Energy, to raise the development of alternative energy technology such as solar cells and electric vehicles. Such challenges are often entered by universities to develop their students engineering and technological skills as well as motor vehicle manufacturers such as GM and Honda.
